Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: How did SAFO come about?
A: SAFO emerged as an effort to
unite our community around Barack Obama’s candidacy for President. We saw the
need for a comprehensive organization that emphasized community outreach, voter
turnout, as well as fundraising. By bringing all members of our community
together, we can engage on all levels of the political process to help determine
the future direction of our country.
Q: How does SAFO help the South
Asian American community?
A: SAFO provides a forum where South
Asians from across the country can come together to express their support for
Barack Obama’s candidacy. By taking a comprehensive and inclusive approach, we
can increase the impact of our efforts. Ultimately, we believe that we are
stronger when we act as a united community than in isolation.
Q: Why is Barack Obama the right
candidate for the South Asian American community?
A: As the son of a foreign-born
father, Barack Obama has experienced the challenges of race and identity that
affect the South Asian American community. He appreciates the rich diversity of
our culture and the positive contributions we all make to this country. His
vision for America is one that embraces its collective identity, where each
member of our society has a stake in the success and well-being of every other
member. By supporting this vision, we can help ensure that the American dream
is a reality for current and future generations of South Asians.
Q: Why “South Asian,” as opposed
to Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, etc.?
A: SAFO recognizes and celebrates
the qualities that make us unique. We believe, however, that the strength of
our political movement is enhanced when we embrace our collective South Asian
identity. The values of education, industry, civil rights, security and respect
for others are not exclusive to any one country or culture. Rather, they
advance the interests of all South Asian Americans. By emphasizing the
principles that unite us as a people, we expand the scope and influence of the
South Asian American community in the political process.
Q: I am not of South Asian
descent. Is SAFO still relevant to me?
A: Yes. Although SAFO seeks to
expand the political participation of the South Asian American community, our
objectives are not restricted by our cultural or ethnic identity. We support
Barack Obama because his vision for America is one that brings together people
of different backgrounds. By supporting SAFO, both with your ideas and your
contributions to the Obama campaign through this site, you are helping to
promote the dual values of unity and diversity in our political process.
Q: Why should I give through SAFO?
A: By giving through SAFO, you are
making more than just an individual contribution. You are giving on behalf of
the South Asian American community. Through SAFO, we speak with one voice in
support of Barack Obama, and your contribution will help amplify that voice.
Q: Will my entire contribution go
to the Obama campaign?
A: Yes. Payments are routed
directly to the campaign, so 100% of your contribution will go to Obama for
America.
